The tambour-major in this scene can't but appear ridiculous over that (19th/20th century?) meagre pin-needle they gave him to swing instead of the real thing (30 kilogram amply decorated in gold leaf and gems) Lully used to conduct his orchestra with at court.

Lullly died from gangrene caused by hitting his foot with his conducting staff (I believe he was seated at the time). He refused to have have his leg amputated because that would mean he would never dance again. I hope dancers and dance fans admire him for being a martyr to the art of dance!
